Reflecting the importance of tourism to sport and leisure businesses in the UK, BISL has launched a dedicated Tourism Working Group, under the Chairmanship of former senior DCMS civil servant, Brian Leonard CBE.

VisitBritain funding
- The Comprehensive Spending Review in October 2007 saw the Budget for VisitBritain cut by 18% for the next three years, with Government arguing that £350m is spent on tourism marketing by the regions.

2012 Tourism Strategy
- DCMS published Winning: a Tourism Strategy for 2012 and Beyond in September 2007. The aim remains to attract £2.1bn of investment on the back of the Games, but there is no dedicated funding to support the strategy.

Heritage Protection
- Following extensive work at DCMS, the Government has published a Draft Heritage Protection Bill, to be considered in the next Parliament, as well as a consultation on the Protection of World Heritage Sites. Both will be considered by the Group.

Planning for Tourism
- BISL successfully lobbied for DCLG to produce a Good Practice Guide on Planning for Tourism and helped to promote it to the regions. The Guide has already been instrumental in a number of planning decisions and its profile is reflected in the inclusion of tourism and leisure in the draft PPS4 (Planning for Sustainable Economic Development), to which BISL responded.

Partners for England Forum
- P4E is a forum for the key players in England’s Tourism industry from both public and private sectors. It is formally supported by the Tourism Alliance and Local Government Association and has already issued (with the LGA) the Placemaking – a Charter for destination management and created the English Tourism Intelligence Partnership. The CEO is a member of P4E
